The
Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a comprehensive
statutory framework that sets the standards for the learning, development and
care of children from birth to five. All providers are required to use
the EYFS to ensure that whatever setting parents choose, they can be confident
their child will receive a quality experience that supports their care, learning
and development. This document guides all practitioners working with
children from birth to the end of their first year at school and will be the basis
for Ofsted Inspection Requirements. It contains four distinct but complimentary
themes. A Unique Child recognises that every child is a unique child
who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.
Positive Relationships describe how children learn to be strong and independent
through positive relationships. Enabling Environments explains that children
learn and develop well in enabling environments in which their experiences respond
to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners
and parents and carers. Learning and Development recognises that children
develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. The framework covers
the education and care of all children in early year's provision, including children
with special educational needs and disabilities.
The Early Years foundation stage has seven learning areas; these are divided between
prime and specific areas of learning and development. This framework ensures "the
child" as an individual in the central focus and starting point for all planning
activities and continuous provision within all areas of our Pre-school.
Throughout the child's time in Pre-school, the staff will undertake regular observations
of the children, using a variety of approaches an example of which would be taking
photographs, as part of an ongoing assessment. This enables staff to analyse what
the child is doing, what evidence of their learning this shows, and to decide
on the 'next steps' for the child. On a regular basis, staff record children's
progress using the EYFS profile which is regularly shared with parents.
We produce daily records containing information about your child's day, meals
eaten, nappy changing and toileting, sleeping and rest times and a general picture
of their wellbeing throughout their time in Pre-school. Daily handover of children
both morning and evening is also used as an opportunity to share information.
We
aim to develop: Self-Awareness
Self-Regulation
Intrinsic motivation
Empathy
Good social communication skills
Independence
A positive mental attitude, self-esteem and confidence
Outdoor
Play and Learning
The strong emphasis we place on outdoor play ensures
children grow learning to appreciate nature and the outdoors. We also encourage
children to explore, learn and discover, to become more adventurous, self- motivated
and able to understand and assess risks. Our children are actively involved
in building and maintaining a number of outdoor initiatives; building a wildlife
area to understand the importance of caring for our habitat and creating a vegetable
patch.
